The Fourth of July in Melrose

The Melrose Business and Community Association sponsors a boat parade every year around Melrose Bay, then around all of Lake Santa Fe and Little Lake Santa Fe.

This year we are adding a picnic in the park. Thursday, July 4, starts with a boat tour of Melrose Bay at 10 a.m. (If needed, you can launch from the Jill McGuire – Alachua County Boat Ramp). Drive past the beach park in Melrose to have your boat’s photo taken. The theme for your decorations, of course, is the stars and stripes of the U.S. flag.

Then at 10:45, boats will gather west of “the Latchstring” and begin to circumnavigate both lakes starting at 11 a.m. This takes about an hour and a half.

Meanwhile, MBCA will hold a picnic in Melrose Bay Park, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will serve a hotdog, chips and a soda for $5. This is a fundraiser and membership drive, so MBCA is offering a $10 Beach Park Membership with the purchase of two hotdog meals, and with $20 you can purchase 4 hotdog meals and receive a voting membership in MBCA.

MBCA is the civic organization for all of Melrose. We intend to bring in new members and new ideas to move Melrose forward. In addition to the boat parade, we host the Christmas parade and lights, and make sure the Melrose Beach Park is safe and fully maintained.

MBCA is working with the authorities on ways to make S.R. 26 through Melrose a safer road for pedestrians. It is our mission to support local businesses and our residents as issues come up.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. at the Dancing Fish Barn. For further info, contact Barbara at 352-218-4036 or [email protected].
