Out of an abundance of caution, the Suwannee River Water Management District is advising all residents in Northeast Florida to prepare now for potential weather impacts from Hurricane Ian.
According to the National Weather Service, Hurricane Ian’s current trek has it affecting the counties within the District later this week, with possible impacts beginning as early as Wednesday. The storm is expected to bring with it heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for flooding.
There are currently no river gages in flood stage in the district; however, gages at Three Rivers, Worthington Springs, Fort White, and O’Leno along the Santa Fe River are expected to enter action stage. With heavy rainfall predicted across the district and into Georgia, localized flooding in low-lying and some riverine areas is expected.
The district advises that all residents begin their preparations now, and ensure:
–If you are near a waterbody or low-lying area, ensure that you have alternate means to enter and exit your property in the event of flooding.
–Move any valuables, including equipment or animals, to higher ground.
–Review real-time rainfall and real-time river and lake levels at the district’s website, www.MySuwanneeRiver.com, located under the Science & Data tab, to help make informed decisions about your area.
