Daniel Nettles

Daniel Nettles

Daniel Elbert Nettles, affectionately known as “Bert,” was born on Aug. 16, 1934, on Ellerbee Curve in Raiford. He passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, at Windsor Health and Rehab, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and warmth and will be cherished by all who knew him. Bert was a proud graduate of Bradford County High School, Class of 1953. His commitment to service was evident early in his life; he spent eight years with the Army National Guard, embodying the values of duty and honor. Following his military service, he began his career with the Department of Transportation, eventually transferring to the Department of Corrections. He dedicated an incredible 39 years to this profession, where he started as a manager of the tobacco factory before becoming the maintenance supervisor when that division was disbanded. His strong work ethic was established at a young age, and he was known for his ability to work well with his hands, which he applied diligently to his farm and cattle. A man of many passions, he found joy tending to Pioneer Family Farm, located off CR 235 on the Lester Johns Memorial Highway. His love for his land was matched only by his involvement in community organizations. He was a proud member of the Bradford Masonic Lodge #35, Eastern Star, and Shriners, where he formed bonds that extended beyond mere friendship. He was not only a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 67 years, Mary “Betty” Nettles, but also a cherished uncle to his niece and nephews, Sharlynn “Shary” and Gene Gordon, Chris Gordon, Ayden Gordon and Clarissa and Blaise Thaw. He formed deep connections with friends who became family over the years, including Samantha (Billy) Brooks and Beth (Bob) Boone. His presence touched many lives, and he will be remembered for his loyalty, kindness, and the unforgettable warmth he brought to every gathering. He possessed a unique ability to make those around him feel loved and valued, leaving a mark on their hearts.

A graveside service was held in his honor on Monday, Sept. 9, at Elzey Chapel Cemetery in Lake Butler. He was a simple man. Therefore, the family requested casual attire for the service. Also, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Pine Hill Masonic Lodge #9, 16768 SE 91st St., Lake Butler 32054.

Rev. Grady Noel

Rev. Grady Noel

Rev. Grady Swanson Noel has crossed over into the Gloryland Way on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at the young age of 86. He was and will always be a beloved husband, father, “Poppy” and minister of the Lord. Grady or “Pop” came into this world on Dec. 23, 1937.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Tazzie Mae Corns Noel; brothers, Charles, Franklin, Lawrence, Albert Jr., and Gerald; and sisters, Betty, Thelma, Ruth, and Hilda. “Pop” was one of 15 children, five of whom are still living, Rex, Jerry, Ralph, Joyce and Naomi, who were from Wildcat Holler, West Hamlin, West Virginia, but he lived with his wife in Middleburg. He was married to the love of his life, the apple of his eye, for 67 years, Barbara Ann Napier Noel; and they had one daughter, Kristy Noel (Rodney) Dunfee, who was God’s greatest gift to him. He had three grandchildren, Kaitlin Noel (Jake) Prevatt, Aaron Hughes (Sarah) Dunfee and his namesake, Patrick Grady (Melody) Dunfee; and one great-grandchild, Timothy Paul Dunfee (Aaron and Sarah).  Pop was a true man of God; he loved the Lord with all of his heart and truly lived to glorify Him up until his last breath. He was a mountain climber, and he never let life, even when he was in his lowest of valleys, get him down. He was a lover of all things West Virginia, an Army and National Guard veteran, a retired CSX transportation railroader, and most importantly, a pastor. He loved gardening, wood-working, being in nature-God’s handiwork, hiking in the woods, camping with his brothers, the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, WVU/FSU fan, golf, music, and food, especially if it was ripe tomatoes from the garden or a good steak. He was not a complicated man. He liked things to remain simple. His philosophy was: “Live life to the fullest extent but keep it simple.” He loved people! He would often say to you, “Good enough.” He would never be pushy or expect too much. He loved taking walks in the morning around his neighborhood and would check in on all the neighbors. He loved his little dogs, Scooter, Pippee, Sissy, Chippy, the one whom he called “the boss” little Red, and cat, Effie. He served as pastor of Lawtey Church of God. He loved his church and his congregation with everything he had in him. We know that he is walking those streets of gold that he has always dreamed of. He was the best person that anyone could ever meet or have in their life, the most selfless, compassionate, funny, hardworking, and loving man. He will be missed terribly, but we have peace in knowing that we will see him again in his new home. We love you forever and a day, our handsome Pop!

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lawtey Church of God, 22296 US 301, Lawtey 32058. The family will receive friends one hour prior at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will take place at Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date.
