Amanda Altman

Amanda Louise Altman, 38, of Starke departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, at Haven Hospice ET York Care in Gainesville.  She was born in Jacksonville on Feb. 21, 1985. She could brighten any room and found joy in spending time with her family.  She was a “Papa’s Girl” who loved her “Papa,” her family, and had a special place in her heart for all children.  Her caring nature was admired, and her memory will be cherished by those who knew her.  In her final days her family was by her side with utmost care, love, and support. and she will be greatly missed.  She was preceded in death by her “Nanny,” Dorothy Hall Altman.

She leaves behind her “Papa,” Donald Leonard Altman Sr. of Starke; brother; Donald “Don” (Debbie) Altman Jr.; natural mother, Rhonda Arnett; half-sister, Christina Bell, and family; along with a large family of aunts, uncles, cousins; and a loving relationship with Derrick Callan and family.

A Celebration of Life was held Monday, Oct. 16, at Bayless Highway Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Conner officiating.  The family received friends before the service at the church.

Quentin Brown

Quentin Lawrence Brown, 47, of Starke passed away on Sunday, Oct 15, 2023 at his residence. He was a life-long resident of Starke and was of the Christian faith. He attended the local schools of Bradford County and was employed by AWP Construction.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Mohsen and Cynthe Berenjian; daughter, Jessica (Trainor) Clayton; sister, Azar Berenjian; brother, Keyvan (Tania) Berejian; one grandchild; two nieces; goddaughter, Jaliya Frett; godson, Terrell James: a host of cousins; and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 20, in the Carl D. Haile Memorial Chapel from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with Pastor Gregory James, eulogist. Interment will be at Oddfellow Cemetery, Starke under the direction of Haile Funeral Home, 802 N. Oak St., Starke.

Arthur Carter

Arthur Carter

Arthur “A.B.” Carter, 82, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023, at UF Health Shands in Gainesville. He was born on July 20, 1941, in Waycross, Georgia, to the late Dewey and Elizabeth Carter. Following high school, he dedicated two years of his life to serving in the United States Army. He was proud of his service and a loyal patriot to our country. He met the love of his life, Sylvia Courson, and after a quick courtship, the two were married in 1970. After a string of various jobs, he discovered a career with CSX, where he served as a bridge supervisor. He took great pride in his work, ensuring the safety of railway operations for countless commuters and freight shipments for 28 years. His career took him and Sylvia all over the country. However, in 1996, they settled home in Lake Butler. In addition to his successful career, he found joy in various hobbies and interests. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, engaged in yard work and building wooden creations with his skilled hands. Sports brought him great excitement, particularly football, baseball, and golf. Although he may have had a gruff exterior at times, his true nature shone through his teasing demeanor. Those fortunate enough to know him well bore witness to his big heart and unwavering kindness. He had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, showering them with love and treating them as his own. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Elizabeth Carter; and his sisters, Onnie Pittman, Gertrude Yancey, Annie Mae Meeks, and Bertha Mae Hickox.

He leaves behind a loving wife of 52 years, Sylvia Carter; his sisters, Helen (Horace) Martin, Josie Drury, and Glenda Portie; along with his brothers-in-law, Ralph (Bonnie) Courson and Alan (Joan) Courson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The services honoring his life took place on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Archer-Milton Funeral Home in Lake Butler. The interment ceremony was held at Douglas Cemetery in Lake Butler immediately following the service with military honors.

Doris Groves

Mrs. Doris Groves, 93, formerly of Starke, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Groves.

Survivors are her children, William (Margie) Groves (Margie), Wayne (Judy) Groves, James (Joy) Groves, and Rebecca Hord; eight grandchildren; and many extended family members.

Services were held Saturday, Oct. 14, at DeWitt C. Jones Chapel. Interment followed at Dyal Cemetery.

Angie O’Steen

Angie Marie O’Steen, 56, of Starke, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, at St. Vincent’s Hospital Clay County after a brief illness. She was born in Gainesville on May 16, 1967, to the late James and Erma Blanton. She was an outgoing and vibrant individual who never met a stranger. Her joyous and bubbly personality illuminated the lives of those around her. She had a zest for life and embraced every moment with enthusiasm and positivity. Her warm and welcoming nature made everyone feel valued and loved. She was a dedicated medical records clerk with RMC. She loved her job and the people she worked with. In her free time, she cherished spending time with her family. Being surrounded by her loved ones brought her immeasurable happiness. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Erma Blanton; and sister, Sheri Archer.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, James O’Steen of Starke; their daughters, Jeannie O’Steen of Lawtey and Heather Jones of Starke; grandchildren, Devon O’Steen, Dalton Griffis, Hailey Griffis, and Zayden Geistlinger; brothers, James Blanton of Starke and Ricky Blanton of Atlanta, Georgia; as well as her special niece, Crystal Johnston; along with a host of nieces and nephews.

To honor her, a visitation was held at Archer-Milton Funeral Home on Monday, Oct. 16, followed immediately by the funeral service. She was laid to rest at Antioch Baptist Cemetery after the service.

Betty Ann Prevatt

Betty Ann Prevatt, 87, was born in 1936 in Jacksonville and passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023, in Gainesville. At a young age, her family relocated from Jacksonville to the family farm in Brooker. She later attended Bradford High School, where she was active in numerous activities, including cheerleading and basketball. She graduated from BHS in 1954 and married Edwin Prevatt the following year. In 1978, she graduated from Rollins College with a degree in business administration and worked as the Director of Human Resources at South Lake Memorial Hospital in Clermont until her retirement. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose kindness and quick sense of humor brought joy to the lives of everyone around her. She was an avid tennis fan and enjoyed playing spirited games of cards and dominoes with family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling, often commenting on how fortunate she was to have seen so much of the world. Her Christian faith was very important to her. Throughout her lifetime, she was actively involved in her local church congregation.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin; daughters, Melissa (Bryce) Foulke and Patricia Prevatt (Robert Reinauer); two grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. A memorial service honoring her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at First Christian Church of Starke. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be designated to Pulmonary Research at Mayo Clinic – Florida. Shirley Wheeler

Shirley Wheeler, 82, of Lake Butler passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, at Haven Hospice in Lake City. Born on July 7, 1941, in Columbus, Georgia to the late Homer and Lois Shelnutt, she led a joyful and fulfilling life that was dedicated to her family. Throughout her life, she found immense joy in being a loving wife and mother. She shared 36 beautiful years of marriage with her devoted husband, William “Bill” Wheeler Sr. Their bond was strong and served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Her nurturing and caring nature extended beyond her marriage as she raised three incredible children. She found enjoyment in traveling, with her favorite destination being Biloxi. Whether it was a solo road trip or a getaway with family and friends, she reveled in the experiences that traveling brought into her life. Shirley was also an active member of the Lake Butler Church of Christ. She is preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Lois Shelnutt; and her husband, William “Bill” Wheeler Sr.

She is survived by her children, Audie Alan (Emily) Wheeler of High Springs, Kathleen Hope (Mark) Redd of Brooker, and William “Bill” (Karen) Wheeler Jr. of High Springs; her grandchildren: Audie (Kaitlyn) Wheeler, Samantha (Alex) Dobosiewicz, Mark Redd Jr., Laura Redd, Kyle (Katie) Wheeler, and Brandon (Stacy) Wheeler; great-grandchildren: Adley, A.J., Donovan, Ava, Corie, Cole, Garrison, Gavin, and Declan; along with a host of nieces and nephews.

The services honoring her memory were held on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Newnansville Cemetery in Alachua. The visitation began at 11 a.m., followed by a graveside service. The service was officiated by Brother Brian Reagan.
