Peter Barnum

Peter “Pete” Albert Barnum,  70, of Starke passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024.  He was born in New Rochelle, New York on Oct. 15, 1954, to the late Royal S. Barnum and Georgette J. Cornell Barnum. He was raised in Gainesville and graduated from Gainesville High School.  Shortly after school, he started his career at Raintree Graphics Printing Company in Jacksonville as a driver. His true passion was people. He was known for his willingness to serve others, his kindness and friendly spirit. He never met a stranger and had a gift for conversation.  He could share a story, give words of encouragement, and bring smiles to many with his outgoing personality.  Pete spent over 25 years as a cook with Hills BBQ catering company in Gainesville, which was a career that brought him much joy.  Creating meals and helping families have a memorable gathering was very rewarding, and he took great pride in his work.  He met his future wife, Cindy Odom, in 2003, and they were happily married on Oct. 28, 2004. He was a devoted husband and loving father who cherished his family and enjoyed spending time with them.  He was certainly full of life, lived it to the fullest, and enjoyed each moment.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Ruth E. Barnum and Sally L. Barnum.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Barnum of Starke; son, Austin O’Dell of Starke; sister, Susan (Shelly) Packer of Gainesville; and numerous extended family members and friends.

His family will celebrate his life in the near future.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of V. Todd Ferreira Funeral Services and Archie Tanner Memorial Chapel, Starke. 904-964-5757.

Emily Collins

Emily Elaine Collins, 28, a cherished daughter, granddaughter, sister and aunt, passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2024. Emily was born July 13, 1996, in Jacksonville and was a lifelong resident of Baker County. She was a member of the 2014 graduating class of Baker County High School and went on to college to receive technical degrees in business operations and business specialties. Emily enjoyed spending her free time outdoors riding four-wheelers with her family and friends. She was an avid Florida Gators fan. Above all, Emily loved her family and her favorite role in life was being an aunt to her nephews and niece, who were her whole world. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Virginia Faye Collins and J. L. Collins; and maternal great-grandparents, S. M. and Mae Miller, and L.W. and Zola Rosier.

 She leaves behind her loving parents, Dennis and Cheryl (Rosier) Collins of Macclenny; brother, Chadwick (April) Collins Sr. of Macclenny; niece and nephews, Addison, Owyn, and Chadwick Jr.; maternal grandparents, Bud Rosier of Lake City and Phyllis Rosier of Starke; as well as aunts, uncles, and other extended family members.

 

Hoyet Daugherty

Hoyet Ervin Daugherty, 83, of Starke, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024, at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lorian Levy; sons, Junior Daugherty and Robert Lacy Carol.

Survivors are his wife, Mabel Daugherty; daughters, Ruth (Mattew) Bryan, Rebecca Hill and Zonna Carol; brothers, Daniel Daugherty and Ray Daugherty; sisters, Betty Adamson and Jackie Kennard; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Sharon Fussell

Sharon Cluff Fussell, 81, the wife of Billie Wayne Fussell went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024. She was born at Camp Blanding on Dec. 25, 1942. Her unwavering faith defined her life. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, above all, followed closely by her deep love and pride for her family. She never missed an opportunity to remind her loved ones how cherished they were. Her years of dedicated service at The Well Church of God in Pulaski, Tennessee, reflected her devotion to ministry. She actively participated in SHAMAR (intercessory prayer), Legacy (the over-50 group), and KP (feeding ministry). A natural nurturer, she had a lifelong calling to serve through food ministry and prayer. Whether in Polk County, or Tennessee, she worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone,regardless of their background, was fed, both physically and spiritually. Her love for people was relentless, and her honesty was guided by her unwavering trust in God. An avid reader, she was rarely seen without a book in hand or in her purse. Her passion for reading left a lasting legacy, even inspiring some of her grandchildren to embrace the joy of books. She was also known for her wisdom, often offering heartfelt advice, especially when she felt led by the Holy Spirit. Her most profound teaching was about love: “Love is a choice. Every day you wake up, you must choose to love. Only when you understand that love is a choice will you find true love.” She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Allen Cluff; mother, Eleanore St. John Palmes; grandparents, Vincient S. St. John, and Mildred H. St. John; and brothers, Joseph Paul Holland II, William Garth Palmes, and Kenneth Lott Holton.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Michael Andrews, Michelle A. (Kit) Wolf of Savannah, Georgia, Raymond Shawn Varnadore of Haines City, Tina (Dale) Pelfrey of Pulaski, Tennessee, and Tamara (Pete) Watson of O’Brien; grandchildren, Billie W. Pelfrey, Keith Wayne Daniels, Tiffany Michelle Watson, Raymond Shawn (Danielle) Varnadore Jr., Geargia (Adam) Bennett, Thomas Dale Pelfrey Jr., Tamara Caroline (Chris) Keyser, Shaina Michelle (Chris) LeDuc, Chelsea Laine (Riley) Cribbs, Kelsey Lynn Levister, Destiny Lenore (Jason) Rowe, James Dalton (Brooke) Pelfrey, Nicholas Milton (Samantha) Pelfrey, Stephen Lee (Faith) Pelfrey; siblings, Chris (Debbie) Palmes of Kathleen, Chase Palmes of Crystal River, David Desch of Tonto Basin, Arizona, Richard “Vincent” (Jo) St. John of Jacksonville, William Hugh St. John and Joy St. John Johnson, both of Starke; and 44 great-grandchildren.

Services were Friday, Nov. 22, at The Well Church of God in Pulaski, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family is requests donations be made at Employee Resources Credit Union under Sharon Fussell.

Frederick Hodges

Frederick William Hodges (Fred), 78, of Starke, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024. He was born in Jacksonville in 1946 to Joe and Lanta Cannon Hodges. He attended Ribault High School. He had many fond memories of his childhood growing up in Jacksonville and spending summers with his Brookins cousins on their farm in Chiefland. He was an avid deer hunter. After retiring from JFRD, he spent time hunting in Alabama, Georgia and Illinois. Anyone who visited him was shown his many trophy bucks in his “Man Cave.” Fred and his wife, Betty, enjoyed camping, cruising and cheering for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Betty; his son, Bill (Ashlea Varnadore); daughters, Amanda (Jason) Manos, and Jill (Richard) Maculewicz; three grandsons, Joseph Hodges, Keith (Ashley) Shope, and Nolin (Dee Ocasio) Robertson; one granddaughter, Marissa Maculewicz (Lee) Brannon; and two great-granddaughters, Luna and Bella Robertson. Being an only child, he is also survived by many cousins who were like siblings, Mavis Tuten Youngblood and Steve and Gary Cannon.

Fred’s celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5, at Keystone Heights Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to your favorite charity or to Keystone Heights Methodist Church, P.O. Box 744, Keystone Heights, 32656 in Fred’s memory. Fred is greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Philip Mobley Sr.

Philip Terrance Mobley Sr.,  77, of Starke, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2024, at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Michael and Carlo Mobley.

Survivors are his wife, Katherene Mobley; son, Phillip Mobley Jr.; daughter, Candy Bilyeu; two grandchildren; and extended family members and friends.

William Quiett Sr.

William Thomas Quiett Sr., 63, of Lawtey died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, at his residence.

Survivors are his wife, Allie Ann Quiett; children, William (Erica) Quiett Jr. Johnathan Lee Quiett, Crystal Rose Miller, Christy Ann (Michael) Mckenzie and Kevin Louis Miller; and seven grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m. at Archie Tanner Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends an hour prior at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Crosby Lake Cemetery.
