Kenneth Brown

HAMPTON Kenneth Jerry Brown, age 70, of Hampton passed away at his home on Friday, November 19, 2021. Kenneth was born in Belmont, Mississippi on August 25, 1951 to the late William Kenneth and Lois “Bates” Brown.  Mr. Brown was an amateur radio operator, a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, avid Gator football fan. He enjoyed working in the yard, and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Duane Brown; his parents; and sister, Brenda Brown.  

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Theresa Brown of Hampton; daughter, Terrie (Timmy) Nazworth of Hampton; brother, Donnie (Wendy) Brown of Groveland; sisters, Martha (Lamar) Brown of Jacksonville, Virginia Crawford of Starke and Kathy (Bob) Grant of Palm Coast; grandchildren, Lloyd “Bo” (Lisa Waddell) Webb of Lake Butler, Makayla (Cameron) Farmer of Waldo, Christopher Phillip Brown of Starke, William Kenneth Brown of Hampton and Brandon Nazworth of Palatka; great-grandchildren, Dixie Webb of Lake Butler and Ezekiel Farmer of Waldo; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in the DeWitt C. Jones Chapel on Wednesday, Nov 24 with Pastor Aaron Morgan of Orange Heights Baptist Church officiating.  A visitation preceded the services.

Barbara Green

BROOKER Barbara Jean Green, 79, of Brooker passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2021, from an extended illness. She was born June 29, 1942, in Anniston, Alabama to Winford and Frances (Martin) Jones. She resided in Green Cove Springs for 25 years where she retired following 24 years of employment with the Clay County Tax Collector’s office. Prior to making Brooker her home, she was baptized 7th Day Adventist; she had a talent for baking and decorating cakes of all sorts and cookies. She also enjoyed antiquing, collecting fenton glass, and tending to her flower garden which was full of butterflies. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy; and a grandson, J.J.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, De Ritch of Booker; three children, Derrell (Becky) Kelly of Green Cove Springs, Steve (Jonelle) Kelly  of Georgetown, Texas, and Anita Jervis of Jacksonville; three step-daughters, Monica (Randy) Andrews, Paula (Greg) Wilkinson and Sondra (George) Bothwell all of Starke. Also left behind are two sisters, Sandra Jones of Alexander City, Alabama, and Diane (Donny) Farguson of Mellow Valley, Alabama; and was lovingly called “granny Jean” or “grandma” by Shenelle, LaTosha, Justin, Ashley, Noah, Giana, Sophia, Addison, Emily, and Taylor; along with numerous great-grandchildren and extended family members and friends.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at Highland Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to Haven Hospice or Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.

LAKE BUTLER Thomas Michael Holmes, age 71, of Lake Butler, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Tommy was born on September 16, 1950, to Joseph William Holmes and Delores Ann (Wainwright) Holmes. He was a lifelong resident of Union County and a 1968 graduate of Union County High. He worked as a mechanic for GE until his retirement in 1993. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, but he especially loved playing bluegrass music. Tommy was a member of the North Florida Bluegrass Association and over the years played in many bands including The Old Time Way and Tri-County Bluegrass. He was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Kristin Renee Holmes; sister, Joanne Hundley; brother-in-law, Thomas Fortner; and uncle, Jimmy Holmes.

Tommy is survived by his children, Joe (Kelly) Holmes of Lake Butler, Melisa (Troy) Ward of Interlachen, David (Karrie) Holmes of Lake Butler, and Desiree Smith of Lake Butler; his grandchildren, Phillip (Marylu) Holmes, Emily (Aaron) Landwerlen, Ashton Ward, Clayton (Erika) Ward, Jesse Arnold, Madison Arnold, Kaitlyn (Cobie) Mann, Tyler Holmes, Keaton Holmes, Trista Holmes, Brandon Ames, Bailey Garrett, Brailyn Rose, Brooklyn Gay, Brislyn Hamill, Easton Smith, Dylan Smith, and Hunter Smith; great-grandchildren, Maxson and Maelyn Mann, and Emerson Holmes; his wife, Lynette Holmes; his siblings, Patsy Fortner, Barbara (Cliff) Waddell, and Brenda (Billy) Croft all of Lake Butler; aunt, Gloria Holmes of Middleburg; brother-in-law, Conrad Hundley; a host of extended family also survive.

A funeral to honor Tommy’s life will be held on Friday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at Archer-Milton Funeral Home with Bro. Richard Harrison officiating. The family will receive friends for a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

LAWTEY Spurgeon Boyce “Spud” Massey, 80, of Union City passed away  Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City, Tennessee. He was born September 7, 1941, in Marion County, son of the late A.E. and Inez Wanda Mae (Hogue) Massey. He was the widower of Carol (Bradley) Massey who preceded him in death. He was a retired truck driver who enjoyed fishing. Prior to moving to Union City, he was a longtime resident of Lawtey,  where he served on the city council and was the fire chief of the Lawtey Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jeannie Wilson; and two brothers, Daniel Massey and Edward Lee Massey.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan Massey Groves of Starke; two sons, Victor (Jo Ann) Massey  of Union City, Tennessee and Kenny Boyce (Samira) Massey  of Centerville, Alabama; 13 grandchildren; 23 great- grandchildren; and one brother, Wayne (Abbie) Spurgeon  of Lawtey. 

Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Salem Cemetery near Union City. Brother Chip Davis officiated.

Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Dec 12,  at 3 p.m. at Tatum Brothers Park, 22598 Park St., in Lawtey.

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS Mary Ann Mayfield of Keystone Heights, age 85, passed away Thursday, November 18, 2021 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka. Mary was born on October 11, 1936 in Enigma, Georgia to the late Lowell and Nelsie (Pickard) Abell. Prior to retirement, she worked in the field of ministry. She pastored churches in many places including Hammond, Indiana, Brunswick, Georgia, and retired following service at Abundant Life Church in Keystone Heights. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Curtis Mayfield; seven siblings; son-in-law, Gene Elkins; and grandson, Curtis Andrew Mayfield.

Survivors are: children, Janet L. Mayfield Elkins of Keystone Heights, Julian Andrew (Sandra) Mayfield of Keystone Heights, Victor C. (Barbara) Mayfield  of Keystone Heights; brother, Paul Abell; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov 22 at the Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment followed at  Keystone Heights Cemetery. Pastor Robert Backwalter officiated the services.

LAKE BUTLER Robert Erwin Menzen, age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his three children on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Jane Fallin Menzen, as well as his parents, Velma and EP Menzen. Robert served in the United States Army after his graduation from Melrose High School. Robert spent 30 years managing Hillandale Farms in Lake Butler and after retirement, he and Jane spent time traveling. He also loved hunting, fishing and Florida Gator football.

Robert is survived by his beloved children, Anita (Franz) Lerch, Stacey Chiappini, and Matt Menzen; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Menzen Lewis.

Please join us in a celebration of his life at Trinity Episcopal Church, 204 State Road 26, Melrose, on Friday, Dec. 3,  at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. STATESBORO Dr. Steven F. Miller, 77. of Statesboro, Georgia passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 16 at East Georgia Regional Hospital. He leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Julianne Temples Miller of Statesboro; and an adored sister, Wendy Miller of Winterhaven. A long-time resident of Keystone Heights, he moved to Statesboro full-time upon his retirement from Bradford County School system as Director of Information Services. He also served as an auxiliary deputy in Alachua County for over 40 years. Steve was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which guaranteed he was forever a Red Sox fan. He moved with his father, Max and mother, Thelma, to the Palm Beach area, graduating from Palm Beach Gardens High School where he was active in sports. He earned a degree in Business Administration at the University of Florida in 1967 and a Master’s in Education in 1974. He would go on to receive his PhD in mathematics. Steve worked in education for his entire career starting in 1967, first as a teacher in Bradford County, then moving on to lead the information Services Departments for all of St. Johns County, Clay County and then back to Bradford County. He is remembered fondly by the thousands of students he influenced and inspired over the years and by co-workers who knew him to be a strong leader, but always a gentleman. Steve had many interests. He never stopped serving the community and loved being an auxiliary sheriff’s deputy for decades. He kept his police standards current even up to this year in Alachua County. He always enjoyed traveling and after his retirement, he and his wife Julie enjoyed the trip of a lifetime to Paris in 2019. Above all, Steve loved the world and dreamed of peace. Especially loved friends are Bruce Donley, Cathy and George Shriver, Bonnie D. Jaeger, Magina Bullock, Ken Southwell, and Patrick Crawford.

Graveside service and burial were held at Eastside Cemetery on Friday, Nov. 19 with Rabbi Robert Haas officiating. BROOKER Jacqueline Richardson, age 84, of Brooker,  passed away peacefully at the ET York Haven Hospice in Gainesville. She was born on October 7, 1937, in Brooker, to Lloyd and Grace Barry. She was a graduate of Bradford County High and spent most her adult life in Brooker. She married Sam Crutchfield, and the two of them ran Crutchfeild Electrical for many years. After his passing, she retired. She was involved with Gideon’s International and a member of Morning Star Baptist Church. She enjoyed working at the church and taught Sunday School classes as her children were growing up. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Samuel Crutchfield and James Richardson; her daughter, Sandra Krajnovich; her sister, Frances Land; brother, Wilbur Barry; and her parents.

Ms. Richardson leaves behind her daughter, Debra (Marvin) Norman; her sister, Helen Crosby; a friend who was more like a son, Tony (Gina) Stalnaker; grandchildren, Joshua (Amanda) Norman, Jason (Lisa) Norman, Jennifer (Alan) Rentas, Jeremy (Chrissy) Parrish, Phillip Stalnaker, Matthew (Erica) Stalnaker, Linn (Tim) Porter; great-grandchildren; Tripp Norman, Stetson Norman, Preston Comstock, CharliAnn Norman, Samantha Harrell, Nicholas Rentas, Noah Rentas, Luke Rentas, Bradley Stalnaker, Tucker Stalnaker, Gracie Porter.

A funeral to honor Ms. Richardson’s life was held on Tuesday, Nov 23, at her church, Morning Star Baptist Church located at 11250 W. County Road 18, Lake Butler. She was laid to rest at Dedan Cemetery in Brooker.

Winnie Watkins

LAKE BUTLER Winnie Lee “Pearl” Watkins, 79, of Lake Butler,  died on November 19, 2021 at her residence. She was born in Raiford where she  attended and graduated from school. She was employed with the Union County Sewing Apparel and later retired from Starke Uniform as a seamstress. She was married to the late Leon Watkins. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by: two step-sons, Leon Watkins Jr.  and Leonard Watkins; numerous step-daughters; brothers, Robert Alexander and L.J Alexander; sisters, Doris Hayes and Jessie Lewis.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov 26,  at the Greater Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church with family hour from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. and friends 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. and one hour prior to the service. The cortege will form at the home of Mrs. Winnie Lee Watkins, 280 Southeast 8 Avenue Lake Butler at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m on Saturday, Nov. 27,  at the Greater Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Lake Butler  with Rev. J.W Warren conducting the services. Interment will be held in Ft. Call Cemetery, Lake Butler  under the direction of Haile Funeral Home Inc., 802 North Oak Street. Starke.
