Constance Califano

 Constance “Connie” L. Califano, 77, of Keystone Heights passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, in Jacksonville.  She was born March 21, 1945, in Memphis, Tennessee to Lamar and Marian (Lester) Brewer.  She graduated with the class of 1963 from Nathan B. Forrest High School in Jacksonville and was employed as a bank manager for 23 years.  She was a parishioner of St. William Catholic Church and enjoyed being outside, looking over the lake or piddling in the yard.  She was very family oriented, and the grandchildren always looked forward to pizza and ice cream night with her. In addition to her parents. she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Frank Califano; and their grandson, Dalton Crofton.

She is survived by her children, Teresa (Timothy) Holloway of Middleburg and Billy (Barbara) Califano of Keystone Heights; along with a sister, Kay (Randy) Dodson of North Carolina; and two brothers, Don (Beverly) Brewer and Al Brewer, both of Jacksonville.  She was lovingly called “Granny” by grandchildren, Kayla (Allan) Vera, Michael Shirley, Elijah Myer, and Ryan Holloway; and great-grandchildren, Emilia and Jackson. 

A Funeral Mass was held   Wednesday, Nov. 2, at St. William Catholic Church with Father Mason Wiggins presiding.  Interment followed at the Keystone Heights Cemetery.

Glenn Carter Jr.

Glenn Lamar Carter Jr., 36, of Gainesville, died on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022. A native of Starke, he attended and graduated from the local schools of Bradford County. He was of the Christian faith. He was a member of Hope of Glory Church in Gainesville, under the leadership of Pastor J. Bernard Brown. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and was employed by Variant Trucking/ U.S. Xpress. He was highly respected and served his family, community and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Jalisa Carter; parents, Glenn Carter Sr. and Angela Carter; sons, Aerion Carter and Glenn Carter III; daughters, Jakayla Carter, Trinity Carter and Kaniya Carter; brothers, Dewayne McBride, Shauntell Carter and Aundre Carter; sisters, Shaent’e Carter, Lorretta Carter and Juanita Carter; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many sorrowing friends.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 12 p.m. at the Freewill Memorial Garden Cemetery, located directly behind Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church, 103 N. Ash St., Starke, 32091, under the direction of Haile Funeral Home Inc., 802 N. Oak St., Starke, 32091, 904-964-7905. Family and friends will meet Saturday at the cemetery at 11:45 a.m.  The Register Book will be open at Haile Funeral Home Inc. on Friday, Nov. 4, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., for signing and at the cemetery on Saturday one hour prior to the services.

May Emma Cashe

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of May Emma Cashe, who died shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, at E.T. York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville.

May Emma was preceded in death by: her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Sirmones Sr; a daughter; three brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by: her three sons, Lance Larry, Travis Hill and James Watkins; five brothers; five sisters; 31 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, at 3 p.m. at Greater Elizabeth Baptist Church (780 S.W. Third St.) in Lake Butler.

All acknowledgement cards and flowers will be received at 915 S.E. Seventh Ave., Lake Butler, FL 32054.

Harry Hileman

Harry Lee Hileman, 84, of Keystone Heights, passed away in Ocala on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022, following an extended illness. He was born May 12, 1938, in Lexington, Virginia to the late John P. and Artice (Porter) Hileman Jr. and had proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. He was employed as an electrician with Mattox, Miller, and Paxon companies and was owner/operator of Alan’s Discount Muffler in Gainesville for five years before retiring in 2001. He was an active and longtime member of Community Church of Keystone Heights, serving on the Executive Board and Head of Ushers, and was a member of the Morocco Shriners Temple Funster Unit in Jacksonville. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports and traveling to the Great Smoky Mountains.

He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Carol (Mattox) Hileman of Keystone Heights; and their three children, Gary (Christina) Hileman of Keystone Heights, Carla (Alan) Montane of Melrose, and Karen (Dan) Pike of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; along with his brother, John P. (Gale) Hileman III of Gainesville. He was affectionately and lovingly called “Pappy” by five grandchildren, Haleigh (Matt) Vivion, Luke (Amanda) Pike, Sam Pike, Mindy Montane and Allyson Montane; along with four great- grandchildren, Harper Vivion, Avery Vivion, Jacob Vivon, and Corrie Vivion.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11, in the Community Church with Pastor Rob Morford and Pastor Ray Peters officiating. A private interment will be at the Keystone Heights Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Community Church of Keystone, P.O. Box 722, Keystone Heights, FL 32656.

Pamela “Pam” Anne Long, 63, of Melrose died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, at her home. She was born July 12, 1959, in Lakeland to Dr. Huey B. and Marie (Ward) Long, Sr. She was preceded in death by her father.

She is survived by her mother, Marie Long of Melrose; and brothers, Huey Billy Long Jr. of Melrose and Mark Stafford Long of Watkinsville, Georgia.

Services will be held at a later date.

Joyce Sasser

Joyce Ann Sasser, 72, of Starke passed away Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022, at Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center in Gainesville. She was born on Aug. 7, 1950, in Middleburg to the late Marion S. and Marie (Padgett) Morrison and was a lifelong area resident. Prior to retirement she worked as a painter for Crosley Trailer Manufacturing. She was a member of Victory Revival Center and enjoyed cross stitching, canning, and camping. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Mark Adkins; a sister, Janet Thornton; and her brother, David Morrison.

Survivors are her husband, John Sasser of Starke; children, Lisa (Archie) Rosier, Denise (John) Kerley all of Lawtey, and Jered Sasser of Starke; her sister, JoAnn Harold of South Carolina. Also left are her ten grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and her fur babies, Star and Simba.

The family will receive friends at the Victory Revival Center, 18882 US Hwy 301 on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. with funeral services beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Randall Griffis officiating.
