Catherine DeRoeck

Mrs. Catherine Edna DeRoeck, 96, of Keystone Heights, passed away at her home Tuesday, May 2, 2023. She was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois to Charles and Frances (Dion) Morrissey. She was a retired accountant for the City of Glenwood Springs in Colorado and was of the Catholic faith. She also enjoyed reading and volunteered many hours, assisting reading teachers for her great- grandson’s school. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, Leonard DeRoeck.

Her survivors are children, Leonard (Patricia) DeRoeck of Georgia, Connie (Marvin) Wilmot of Colorado, Mary (David) Gonzales of Florida, Lucy (Michael) Krause of Keystone Heights, John DeRoeck of Colorado, and Eileen (Robert) Parker of Florida. Also left behind are two brothers, Ed Morrissey and Patrick Morrissey, both of Illinois. She was lovingly called ‘Nana’ by several grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 27, at her home. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Illinois at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society to help fight Breast Cancer.

Janet McKinney

Janet McKinney

Mrs. Janet “Jeanie” Davis McKinney, 94, a longtime resident of the Starke and Keystone Heights area passed away Friday, May 5, 2023, at Roberts Care Center in Palatka. She was born Oct. 24, 1928, in Jacksonville to Joe and Opal (Sapp) Davis. She retired from the Duval County Property Appraisers office as the first female draftsman in Duval County. She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church, Eastern Star, and the Senior Dance Club. She enjoyed oil painting and being outside working in the yard and the garden, but, most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Clinton Orville “C.O.” McKinney; and daughter-in-law, Lola McKinney.

Her survivors are three children, Deborah M. (Thomas) Johnson of Satsuma, Benjamin J. McKinney of Starke, and Victoria J. (Gordon) Bartholf of Midway, Georgia. She was lovingly called “Mee-maw” by nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 12, at the DeWitt C Jones Chapel with Pastor Scott Stanland officiating. Interment will follow at Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Trinity Baptist Church for their Music Ministry.

Barbara Reed

Mrs Barbara Marks Reed, 80 of Starke, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She was a lifelong resident of Bradford County and a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She attended the local schools of Bradford County. She graduated from college and earned an associate’s degree and was of the Baptist faith. She served within the church choir, on the Usher Board, as Mother of the Church, and was a past Matron of the Heroines of Jericho Ruth Court #18 Starke.

She is survived by her sons, Quantavian Reed and Toddrecke Reed; daughters, Janett Heidelberg and Shi’Rena Reed; brothers: Tom Marks Jr. and Steven Marks; sisters, Gail Stockton and Maria Marks; and a host of grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Alvin Green, Eulogist, conducting the services (no viewing at the church). Interment will be held at Oddfellow Cemetery, Starke, under the direction of Haile Funeral Home Inc., 802 N. Oak St., Starke, 32091, 904-964-7905. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 12, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Carl D. Haile Memorial Chapel/Haile Funeral Home Inc. The Cortege will form at the residence of Mrs. Barabra Marks Reed at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 13. There will be a viewing at the cemetery prior to the committal on Saturday.

Wallace Smith

Wallace “Wally” Nelson Smith, 72, of Keystone Heights died Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at St. Vincent’s Clay in Middleburg.

Survivors are his wife, Kathleen (Lecas) Smith, of Keystone Heights; children, Tiffany (York) Pasanen, Kristen (Rick) Waychoff, and Troy (Brittany) Smith; and many extended family members.

Graveside services were held Saturday, May 6, with his nephew, Rev. Corey Smith, officiating.  Interment followed at the Smith Family Cemetery.
