Ramona Crapse

LAWTEY Ramona Mary June Crapse, 91, of Lawtey, went to her heavenly home on Monday, May 2, 2022, at Parkside Assisted Living in Starke. She was born in Leonardtown, Maryland on June 25, 1930, to the late Edward Bennett and Virla Karr Bennett. She spent most of her childhood residing in Missouri and Louisiana. While in Louisiana, she met the love of her life, Michael David Crapes Sr., and on Dec. 21, 1948, they were married. Together they relocated to Jacksonville, where they raised their babies and made many beautiful memories. They attended Anniston Road Baptist for many years while living in Jacksonville. In 1974, she and her family made Lawtey their forever home. She was an active member of Faith Baptist church where she enjoyed serving and worshiping her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She enjoyed selling Avon, where she made women feel beautiful, for over 30 years. She enjoyed cooking and planting plants at her home. Above all else, she was a God-fearing wife and mother whose greatest accomplishment in life was raising her children and taking care of her family. She will be missed by all who knew her; especially her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Michael David Crapes Sr.; sons, Michael Crapes Jr. and Phillip Crapes; daughter, Patricia June Wheeler; brothers, Ralph Bennett, David Samuel Bennett and Holmer Bennett; sisters, Florence Bennett Pate and Iva Bennett Johns.

She is survived by her children, Bruce (Kye Mae) Crapse of Jacksonville, Bea (Jimmy) Ceballos of Lawtey, Mary Hill of Jacksonville; daughter-in-law, Denise Crapse of Keystone Heights; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 6, at 11 a.m.  at Bible Baptist Church, with Pastor Roger Worten officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memory Gardens at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 5, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Cynthia DeBlock

STARKE Cynthia Ann DeBlock, 64, of Starke passed away in Jacksonville on Saturday, April 23, 2022. She was born on May 23, 1957 in Newton, New Jersey to the late Edward J. Callahan Sr. and Marian M. “Onder” Callahan. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Shannon Lynn DeBlock; her parents;  and her brother, Edward J. (Denise) Callahan, Jr.

Survivors include her son, Albert (Mary) DeBlock Jr.; brothers, Hugh Patrick (Jacqueline) Callahan and Timothy J. (Susan) Callahan; sister, Lynn (Eric) Steck; grandchildren, Vivian DeBlock and Sydney DeBlock, along with several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Monday, May 2, at Crosby Lake Cemetery with Father Jan-Yan Ligeza officiating.

HAMPTON Paul Glenn Friese, 78, of Hampton passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. He was born on Feb. 16, 1944, in Illinois to the late F. R. and Lorene “Nimmo” Friese. He was a long-time member of the IBEW #1205 and enjoyed music, hunting, and reading. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jolene Friese; and his parents.

Survivors include his children, Sandra Acree of Lawtey, and Glenn Friese of Jacksonville; sister, Barbara Mitin of Tennessee; grandchildren, Wyatt Friese of Jacksonville, Kevin Acree of Lawtey and Presley Acree of Lawtey.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, May 3, at Santa Fe Cemetery with Brent Kuykendall officiating.

Virginia Kobiata

Virginia Ann Porter Kobiata passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2022. She was the only child of Charles and Betty Porter and was born in Logansport, Indiana on Jan, 5, 1928. They moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she graduated high school from St Vincent’s, where she had lifelong friends. She married Walter Kobiata on April 26, 1947 and they celebrated 52 years together before he passed in 2001. They enjoyed many years of retirement in Keystone Heights. She was very involved with the Lady’s Association at the golf course, and St William’s Catholic Church. She had many cherished friends through her life who were very special to her. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; infant son, David; daughter, Sandy Boston; and grandson, Jason Boston.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Kobiata of Holland, Michigan; son, Michael (Patrice) Kobiata of Keystone Heights; grandchildren, David (Jennifer) Roberts III, and Laura Casler; great-grandchildren, Dominik Casler and Emily Roberts of  Keystone Heights; son-in-law Mike Boston of Raleigh, North Carolinia;  and grandson, Brian Boston of Jacksonville; granddaughter, Marisa Boston; great-grandchildren, Felix Boston and Rafael Boston of Denver, Colorado.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 11 a.m. at St William Catholic Church, Keystone Heights. Memorials in her name to Huntington’s Disease Association would be greatly appreciated.

Barry Moore

Barry Layne Moore passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2022 due to a long term illness. He was an incredible artist, musician, father, brother, son, friend, uncle, and loved one.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Bud Moore; and his brothers, Monte, Larry, and Randall Moore.

He is survived by his son, Shane Moore, of Hampton; and his brother, Derrial Moore of Rising Fawn, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.  

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m. at Hampton Christian Church in Hampton. All are welcome to attend.

Jason Johnson

STARKE Jason Corey Johnson, 51, of Starke passed away Thursday, April 28, 2022 at St. Vincent’s-Clay in Middleburg. He was born on Dec. 10, 1970 in Starke. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Gainesville and was self-employed, working in the construction industry. He loved spending time with family and friends, and the outdoors, but his passion was duck hunting. Preceding him in death was his mother, Faye Ann Bagwell.

Survivors are his children, Callan M. (Dakota) Johnson of Keystone Heights, and Michael Corey Johnson of Gainesville; his father, Johnnie P. (Melba)  Johnson of Starke; brother, Shane Johnson of Dallas, Texas; nephew, J. Reed Johnson of Dallas, Texas; and his finance, Kelley Taylor of Starke. Also left is his granddaughter, Ella Grace Acker; his aunts and uncles, Donnie (Shirley) Bagwell of Starke, Tammie (David) Woodard of Starke; and the mother of his children, Michelle Sexton of Gainesville.

The family will receive friends at Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home of Starke on Friday, May 6, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 7 at the First United Methodist Church of Starke at 11 a.m. with Rev. Phyllis Ratz

Phyllis Ratz

Phyllis Ratz passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022. She was in Jacksonville, in 1934, and lived in Florida nearly her entire life. She is the eldest daughter of Annie Mae Marcy and Sylvester Phillip Wineman Jr. She graduated from Jackson High School in 1952, and  soon after was employed by Prudential Life Insurance Company. She was married in 1955, after meeting the love of her life, Kenneth Ratz Jr. Soon four daughters were added to their family. In the midst of raising four daughters, she began and completed her college education. In 1974, she graduated from the newly formed University of North Florida (UNF), as a member of the Charter Class. As a recipient of a BA degree in elementary education, she began a career in teaching elementary school, first in private schools in Jacksonville, then for Duval County Public Schools and then for Putnam County Schools. Although she taught various grades in her career, she  liked first grade the best, as she was able to witness the most progress in children’s education and was able to teach many how to read their first words. She spent the first half of her life in Jacksonville, then she and Ken moved to Melrose, then St. Augustine Beach, then Fruitland Park, and then back to Melrose. After retiring from Putnam County Schools, she was one of the three co-founders of Lake Area Ministries in the Melrose/Keystone Heights area. After that, she spent her later years tutoring children, caring for her elderly parents and providing visitation of elderly shut-ins for the parishioners of St. William Church. She and Ken spent countless hours doting on their five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They also spent many hours with Rocky’s children, Fletcher and Connor during their formative years. Her daughter, Linda, and her husband Rocky moved into the Melrose home and acted as primary caregivers for Phyllis and Ken during their later years. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 61 years, Ken.

She is survived by her four daughters and their husbands, Catherine (Henry) Rideout, Laurie (Michael) Thomas, Linda (Rocky) Ratz-Thompson, and Brenda  MacGibbon (Todd Dixon); five grandchildren, Matthew Rideout, Amanda Khansa, Jacob MacGibbon, Jared MacGibbon, and Katarina Thomas; two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Amelia Khansa; her sister, Sandra (Merv) Altman; sister-in-law, Evelyn Dykeman; nephews and nieces; and numerous cousins.

Her viewing will be Thursday, May 5,  at 1 p.m. and funeral Mass at 2 p.m.,  both at St. William Catholic Church, 275 Satsuma St., Keystone Heights. A burial service will follow at Eliam Cemetery in Melrose. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Lake Area Ministries.

HAMPTON LAKE Julian Lester “J.L.” Slade, 91, of Hampton Lake passed away Monday, May 2, 2022 at Riverwood Health and Rehab in Starke. He was born on Nov. 18, 1930 in Keystone Heights, to the late Lester and Lula (McKinney) Slade and was lifelong area resident. He was a member of The Church of Hampton, and prior to retirement worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Bradford County Road Department. He was an avid hunter and long-time member of Piney Bay Hunt Club and a founding member of Camp 229 Hunting Club. He also enjoyed gardening and fishing. One of his greatest joys was children, often aggravating kids at church, but, he always had candy for them. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertice (Rosier) Slade.

Survivors are his daughter, JoAnne Slade of Hampton Lake; brother, C.W. (Brenda) Slade of Hampton; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 4, at 11 a.m.  at Santa Fe Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the graveside beginning at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow with Pastor Donnie Lott officiating.

Adeline Teske

 KEYSTONE HEIGHTS Adeline Margaret Teske, 97,  passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. She was born in Watseka, Illinois on  Aug. 12, 1924. She graduated from Cissna Park High School in 1942. During World War II, she was a pilot for the Civil Air Patrol in the Chicago area and flew an observation plane around southern Lake Michigan. She received her bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and her master’s degree from Northwestern University. She became an adherent of the Baha’i Faith in Evanston, Illinois; later traveling extensively in Venezuela as an international Baha’i teacher, residing there for more than six decades, and serving for a period in the 1960s on the national governing body of the Baha’is of Venezuela. She taught in Illinois and Venezuela for over 60 years, teaching subjects from English, science and history, as well as all levels of mathematics. She retired from teaching in 2015 at the age of 91.

She is survived by her younger brother, Edgar Teske; and eight nephews and nieces and their families.

A graveside ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 19, at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery in Gainesville. Please join us in offering prayers for the progress of her illumined soul in the next world.
