Lisa Boulding

Lisa Boulding, 63, of Raiford, died Saturday, May 13, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.   She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Leslie Morris.

Survivors are her husband of over 30 years, Carl Boulding of Raiford; children, Arianne (Donald) Martin of Middleburg, Zayne Tice of Starke and Carissa (James) Bentley of Deltona; five grandchildren; and many extended family members.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home, 620 E. Nona St., Starke, 32091,  Burial will take place in Crosby Lake Cemetery, Starke.

Margaret Campbell

Margaret Louise Campbell, 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on May 23, 1948, in Jacksonville, to Lindsey Rowe Jr. and Willa Starling Rowe. She was a dietitian at North East Florida State Hospital until her retirement. She was an exceptional professional who dedicated her life to helping others. She loved the outdoors and cherished her time camping, fishing, and gardening. She was also a frequent visitor to yard sales, where she often found hidden treasures. She had a strong bond with her sisters that lasted throughout her life. She entertained her family with great joy and happiness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lindsey Jr. and Willa Rowe; her husband, George Campbell; sons, John Geskie and Michael Geskie; and brothers, Larry Rowe and Lindsey Rowe.

She is survived by her son, Joseph (Cynthia) Starling of Lake Butler; daughters, Raven Gaskins and Katie Matthews, both of Jacksonville; sisters, Jewell (Billy) Hall, Anne Hurst, Elaine Valdez; grandchildren, Dalton, Jadyn, Walker, Chris, Ky, Desi, Mya, Aaliyah, Kingston, and Izaiah; along with several other relatives and friends who will all miss her dearly.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Archer-Milton Funeral Home, 55 N. Lake Ave., Lake Butler where visitation will be held on Saturday, May 20, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery on Monday, May 22, at 9 a.m.

Richard Chandler

Richard Chandler

Pastor Richard Chandler, 79, of Starke passed on Friday, May 12, 2023, at Haven Hospice of Gainesville. He was a lifelong resident of Bradford County and a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He attended the local schools of Bradford County and retired from E.I. Dupont De Nemours Company as head operator. He was of the Baptist faith and also a past member of the Morning Star Masonic Lodge #26, member of the “Starke Tigers” baseball team, the “Bradford Hawks” basketball team and an RJE Tiger.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Dianne Chandler; son, Edward Lamar Hamilton Sr.; daughter, Rasheeta D. Chandler-Coley; brothers, Harrington Chandler, Christy Chandler, Ross Chandler, Harold Chandler, Captain Early Chandler, Michael C. Chandler Sr. and Gregory Chandler; sisters, Mary Taylor, Bettye Fluellen, Juanita Phillips, Sandra J. Chandler and Marilyn Thomas; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many sorrowing friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the True Vine Outreach Ministries Church, Starke with Associate Pastor Edward Lamar Hamilton (Eulogist) conducting the services. Ellis Coleman

Ellis Coleman

Ellis Eugean Coleman passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on Saturday, May 6, 2023, after a brief illness. He was 79 years old. He was a native of Bradford County, making his mark in history through his relationships with people and his service to the area. Everyone knew Ellis. With his tall frame and a shockingly impressive head of thick red hair, he made lasting impacts in Bradford and Alachua counties and the city of Hawthorne with his memorable persona. Born to Lillie Lee Coleman and Frank Coleman on May 19, 1943, he was a native to Bradford County. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Robert “Bobby,” Roy, Harold, and Enest. With siblings and friends, he took advantage of childhood weekends exploring, hunting, swimming, fishing, and camping. He was a member of the Army National Guard and loved this country and the opportunities it provided. He was part of the first graduating class of EMTs for Alachua County. That was the start of leaving his mark on the area. For the city of Hawthorne, he served three-plus terms as a city councilman, going on to be elected mayor of the city for six terms. He was also a 46-year, 32nd-Degree Master Mason of Hawthorne, Lodge #103. Living out his philosophy of being known by action over words, he launched a 30-year career as a real estate developer and 25 years as a well driller. He never met a house he did not want to rehab. He was also a voracious reader of history and US Presidents and enjoyed classic western movies in down time.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Janie; children, Denise (Ken) Story, Dena (Dan) Lewandowski of Keystone Heights, Donna (Jerry) Waters of Hawthorne; stepchildren, Diana (Leslie) Hollis of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Hayden (Carrie) Gafford of Winchester, Virginia; and sisters, Inez Kappellen, Wanda Cribbs, and Clarise Tussinger all of Starke. He was a devoted ‘Grandpa,’ often attending sporting events and performances and offering life advice to grandchildren Kelsey (Tyler) Waters-David, Weslee Waters, Jack Lewandowski, Luke Lewandowski, Mark Lewandowski, Lindsay (Chad) Hill, Julia Hollis, Gwen Hollis and Emma Hollis; and great-grandson, Hollis Hill. The family wishes to express sincere thanks for the excellent care provided by UF Health Shand’s Cancer Hospital and Haven Hospice.

The Celebration of Life will be held at the Park of Palms Church, 753 Hebron Ave., Keystone Heights, 32656 at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20. Betty Crawford

Betty Crawford

On Thursday, May 11, 2023, Betty Grace Crawford passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born Dec. 7, 1923, in Bartow to Mattie Mae and Bradley Taylor. She moved to Union County in 1936, where she met the love of her life, St. Claire “Red” Crawford.  The two were married July 26, 1941, and went on to have 12 children before his death in 1974. She was a founding member of Blackwelder Memorial Baptist Church in Worthington Springs and remained an avid and dedicated member until her passing. Her greatest wish was that her family find and accept the Lord and serve him. She was known for her loving devotion to her family, her quick wit, her admiration for flowers, enjoyment of puzzles, and her passion for Jesus. She was preceded in death by her husband; “Red”; her son, Billy Crawford; her daughter, Linda-Kay Jones; her granddaughters, Tammy Grammer and Landa Yester; four brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by her brother, James Taylor; and two sisters, Becky Stone and Virginia Benton; her children, Wayne (Pauline) Crawford, Mary-Sue (Benny) Adams, Barbara (Bill) Sefcik, H.G. (Connie) Crawford, Pat (Chuck) Kuhr, Charles (Susie) Crawford, Larry (Joyce) Crawford, Martha (Bill) Stein, Lester Crawford, and Kim (Rodney) Barnett; her son-in-law, Paul Jones; and her daughter-in-law, Gail Crawford; 35 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren.

A service to honor her life was held Tuesday, May 16, at Archer-Milton Funeral Home. She was laid to rest immediately following the service at Ft. Call Cemetery. Services were officiated by Rev. Sid Baker, Rev. Bobby Clyatt, and Rev. Barry Hedrich. Clyde Griffis Jr.

Clyde Griffis Jr.

Clyde Clinton Griffis Jr. passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at the age of 85 in Starke. He was born on Nov. 4, 1937, in Lawtey, to his parents Clyde Sr. and Sybil Rosier Griffis and spent most of his childhood there. He attended Bradford County High School and graduated in 1955. Afterward, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he spent two years serving our country. While stationed in Arizona, he attended college and met the love of his life.
He was a devoted husband to Roberta Griffis, whom he was married to for 38 years before her death. He also had five daughters: Denise Griffis of Starke, Michelle (Mark) Tompkins of Starke, Teresa Elliott of Missouri, Amy Lamb of Trenton and Daphane Lamb of Trenton, whom he loved and cherished immensely.
He had an array of hobbies and interests which included playing games with his grandkids, reading books that piqued his interests, and fishing, as it brought peace to him whenever things got overwhelming. Most importantly though, he loved telling stories about growing up and his time in the military; as well as working on farms, as it allowed him a chance to always be active. He will be remembered for his loving nature and willingness to help anyone he could. He was a man of integrity whose kindness spoke volumes about his character. Whenever he spent time interacting with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, he did so without any judgment and only wanted to make them feel happy. His legacy will continue to live on through the family and friends he impacted while alive. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Roberta Griffis; grandson, John O’Neal Jr.; sister, Geraldine Griffis McDonald; brother, John Solomon Griffis; and nephew, Carl McDonald.

He is survived by his five daughters mentioned earlier; grandchildren, Justin Griffis, Selah (Austin) Browning, Jared (Miranda) Griffis, Joseph “Josh“ O’Neal, Jacob O’Neal, Amber O’Neal; numerous foster grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous foster great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews who he loved and adored with all his heart.

On Saturday, May 20, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. there will be a visitation service for friends and family members at Archer-Milton Funeral Home, 55 N. Lake Ave., Lake Butler. The funeral service ceremony will be held the next day at Bayless Highway Baptist Church, 11798 N.W. C.R. 225, Starke, beginning at 2 p.m. The burial ceremony is scheduled immediately afterward at Long Branch Cemetery, 5500 Long Branch Cemetery Road, Jacksonville.

Joel M. Hull

Joel M. Hull

Joel Mathew Hull Sr., 92, of Palatka passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Roberts Haven Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.  Joel went by Joe, but was called “Joe Mack” by many from Palatka. He was born in Live Oak on Apr. 23, 1931.  His family moved from Live Oak to East Palatka when he was a youngster.  He graduated from Mellon High School in 1949, where he played football (All Conference) and baseball. He served as Vice-President of the Senior Class as well. Following high school, he attended Rollins College on a football scholarship. Rollins discontinued the football program, but offered the football players an opportunity to try out for baseball and to continue with a scholarship if they made the baseball team.  He made the baseball team and later earned his B.S. degree in Education from Rollins. He belonged to the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at Rollins. He would later earn his master’s degree from Southeastern Louisiana University. He began his coaching and teaching career in Eau Gallie, where he met his sweetheart of 69 years.  He later moved to Starke for a coaching job, moved to Palatka for a teaching and coaching job and, in 1961, moved to Panama City, where he taught history, was an assistant coach and became head football coach and athletic director of the Bay County Tornadoes. He ended his coaching tenure in 1973 and took a job in administration as an assistant principal in Starke. After three years in Starke, he took the job of principal at Crescent City High School. He ended his career in education at the district office as human resource director. He had been involved in many endeavors in the Putnam County community.  He was an active member of St. James Methodist Church, where he held many positions in service to his church. He belonged to the Crescent City Rotary Club for many years. He was a charter member of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Palatka, where he was past president and served on the board of directors. He was honored with the Paul Harris Fellow Award as well. He was an avid Florida Gator fan and belonged to the Putnam County Gator Club. He served on the Riverbend Condominium Board over the years, where he loved to get out in his boat and fish with family and friends. He and Nancy made several mission trips to Haiti, servicing those less fortunate. He was a longtime supporter of Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, where he liked to take people to see the good work being done there. He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Dana Lanier Hull; his precious baby, William Brantley Hull; as well as his siblings, J. B. Hull Jr., and Katheryn Hull Dancy. 

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Snead Hull; daughter, Nancy K. Hull Denmark; sons, Joel Matthew (Sheila) Hull Jr. and Michael Scott (Julie) Hull; grandchildren, Stephen G. Denmark III, Joel Matthew (Jules) Hull III, Zachary Scott (Lindsey) Hull, Taylor (Justin) Hull (Justin) and Dalton Scott Hull; four precious great-grandchildren, Ava Dorsey, Brantley Hull, Palmer Hawkins and Sadie Jane Hull; and many nieces and nephews.

Services celebrating his precious life will be Thursday, May 18, at 11 a.m. with visitation at 10 a.m.  The visitation and service will be held at St. James Methodist Church with Pastor John Schafer and Rev. Hardy Sandlin officiating.  Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery, Palatka. Betty Sue Matthews, 89, of Bland passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, May 11, 2023. She was born Aug. 12, 1933, in Starke to the late Joel and Sarah Sapp Alvarez. She was a beautiful person inside and out. She always dressed impeccably and loved to accessorize. She had the biggest heart and most beautiful smile. She cared deeply for the people around her. She had incredible patience, and always made time to help others. She was very kind and thoughtful. She was instantly adored by every person that had the pleasure of meeting her. She will be forever missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 55 years, Bland Matthews; son, John C. Matthews; four brothers; and three sisters.

She is survived by her children, Joel Matthews of Bland and Bobbie (Larry) Dees of Ringgold, Georgia; grandchildren, Robert Dees, Bland Matthews, Courtney (Lorenzo) Sturgis, Alyssa Bradley; great-grandchildren, Dixie, Katie, Austin, Donnie, Vincent, Luci; and great-great-grandson, Quincy.

A service to honor her was held Monday, May 15, at Archer-Milton Funeral Home. She was laid to rest immediately following the service at Ft. Call Cemetery.

Elzie Shadd

Elzie Allison Shadd, a loving husband to JoAnn Shadd, father of five, and a grandfather to six grandchildren, passed away at his family home on Sunday, May 14, 2023, in his hometown of Raiford, He was 78 years old. He was born on Feb. 18, 1945, to Elvin Shadd and Edna Varnes Shadd. He was a hard worker from a young age, and eventually went on to pursue a career in the sawmill industry. He worked long hours but always had time for family and friends.
He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. In 1983, he married the love of his life, JoAnn, and they spent 40 happy years together. He enjoyed farming, gardening, and anything outdoors. Throughout his entire life, he prioritized time with family above all else. His daughters, Donna (Jessie) Harvey of Raiford, Jennifer (Don) Andrews of Dunnellon, Kayla (Daniel) Cubbedge of Raiford; stepchildren, Billy Horne of Keystone Heights and Amy (Jason) Hunter of Macclenny held a special place in his heart, as did his grandchildren, Taylor Andrews, Chase Shadd, Baylie Cubbedge, Danni Cubbedge, Payton Parker, and Pierce Parker. As well as spending time with relatives that lived nearby such as siblings, Edward Shadd, Linda (Bill) Buchtmann (Bill), and Audrey (Jerry) Wilson; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mary Nell Archer.

Services were held on Wednesday, May 17, at Archer-Milton Funeral Home in Lake Butler. Services were officiated by Pastor Randall A. Griffis Sr.

Patricia Yon

Mrs. Patricia “Pat” Ann Yon, 70, of Starke died Friday, May 12, 2023, at Haven Hospice in Gainesville. 

Survivors are her daughters, Kerri (Charles) Leach of Gainesville and Brittany (David) Thornton of Starke; a sister, Norma-Jean Porter of Jacksonville; and four  grandchildren.
