Helen Hess

Helen Hess

STARKE Helen Hess passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, due to complications from acute illness at Riverwood Nursing home in Starke. She was born in Fairbanks and grew up in neighboring Waldo. She was the daughter of Eddie Carmel Ward and Annie Maybell Ward née Melton. She married her first husband and father of her children, who preceded her in death, James Calvin Maxey, in 1950. They began their family and adventures by moving cross country to California as James served in the Navy. Her strength, love, and determination reflected in her ability to raise her children single handedly during her husband’s many deployments and to make more than one cross-country road trip with those strong-willed children. She considered her children to be her greatest accomplishment. Altogether there were eight, one child preceding her in death, Gary James Maxey. She is survived by her other children: Brenda (Robert) Maxey-Billings, Sandra Kay Maxey, Larry Calvin (Annette) Maxey, Buddy Eugene (Gena) Maxey, Wanda Maxey (Pete) Roe, Barry Eugene (Lisa) Maxey, and Cary Edward (Sandy) Maxey. She married Donald Harvey Hess in 1979. During their marriage, they resided in Jacksonville and Waldo until his death in 2006, enjoying many years surrounded by her loved ones as 17 grandchildren joined the family. She never complained about the noise, the mess, the untold amounts of French toast, or the reprises of the “Fruit Dog” song passed on to her grandchildren by their parents. Later she would enjoy the addition of 17 great-grandchildren. She was fortunate to find love again, when she met Newell Brett Hope Jr. of Interlachen, 11 years ago. She and Brett traveled and enjoyed visits with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They lived happily in union in Interlachen and then Keystone Heights until his death in 2019. She was resilient, a strong capable woman with many accomplishments, and “lived a very full life” (as she herself put it); however, dearest to her heart were her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Harold Eddie (Claudia) Ward and William Carmel (Dianne) Ward.

Her living siblings include: Allen Farriew (Pat) Ward, Dorothy Mae Jessen, Doris Emogene Hunt, and Charles Edward (Jeannette) Ward.

Please join us to celebrate a remembrance of her life through the eyes of her family and friends as we recount stories and reflect on the impact her life had on us all. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. at LifeSpring Church, 1404 Bessent Road, Starke.

Dorothy Moore

Dorothy Moore

Dorothy S. Moore was born to the late Charlie and Lonnie Mae Spearmon on May 10, 1937, in St. Joe. Her husband, Jesse Moore, Jr. preceded her in death. Dorothy departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021.

Dorothy, affectionally known as “Dot” and “Day” graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Bunnell.  Because of her high achievement, she received an academic scholarship from the state of Florida. She chose to enroll at Florida Memorial College in St. Augustine, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, became a starting member of the women’s basketball team, and joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.  Later, she earned a Master’s degree in Math Education from the University of Florida, Gainesville, and completed coursework for certification as a Media Specialist. She began her professional career as a teacher at CC Anderson Jr. High School, Lawtey.   She taught math, science and physical education, and coached girls’ basketball.  She also met the love of her life, Jesse J. Moore Jr.  They were united in Holy Matrimony on July 1, 1961, in Bunnell.  The completely devoted couple was together for over 58 years. After school desegregation in Bradford County in the 1970s, she continued her teaching career at Bradford Middle School in Starke. In 1978, Dot and colleague, Peg Stanwix-Hay were awarded a federal Title IV-C math grant.  The grant, written to help middle school students learn math, was one of only six grants awarded to public schools in  Florida at that time.  The methodology and teaching materials developed by the program are still being used today as supplemental materials for elementary, middle, high school and adult education programs. She also taught in the Bradford County Adult Education Program.  As a testament to her passion for education, she encouraged her mother-in-law, Mrs. Charlie Moore, to enroll in the adult education program, where she earned her high school diploma at 78 years of age.  Christian and community activities were an important part of her life as well.  She was an active member of her church, Mt. Zion A.M.E., Lawtey.   She sang in the church choir, typed, printed, and prepared programs for Sunday morning church service (before the age of widespread computer use); and would often assist in the preparation of meals for the various church functions. She was known for her cooking skills and would take meals to some of the elderly and sick members of the community.  She also had the opportunity to play “Mrs. French”, a leading role for a mock trial video at Ullman Bursa Law in Tampa, her daughter Lois’ place of employment.  Throughout the years of her retirement, and until her health started to fail, she enjoyed visits from previous students, who would often stop by to see her just to say, “thank you.”

Those left to cherish the memories of Dorothy are:  their devoted daughter: Lois Moore (Willie) Ferguson of Spring Hill; step-daughter, Kim (Aron) Muse, Jacksonville; one brother, Joe Nathan (Linda) Spearmon, Daytona Beach; two sisters:  Charlie (Joseph, deceased) Jenkins, Huntsville, Alabama; Dorothy Griggs, Gainesville; three brothers-in-law, Jimmie (Lola) Moore, Daytona Beach, Robert (Patricia) Moore, Miami; Joe (Queen, deceased) Brown, Bunnell; seven sisters-in-law: Clara (James) Walker, Beatrice Baker, Rose L Flucas, Queen (James) Richardson all of Jacksonville; Minnie (Aldin, deceased) Phillips, Sanford; Gail  (Willie, deceased) Moore,  Palm Beach; Willie M.
