STARKE Jon H. Brownell, 87, formerly of Hastings, died at his home in Starke on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022.

A Celebration of Life service will be held this summer in Hastings, Michigan.

LAKE BUTLER Dana Lynn Corson, 54, of Lake Butler passed away Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021 at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville following an extended illness. She was born on Sept. 6, 1967 in Mears, Virginia and graduated from Arcadia High School in Virginia. After graduation she moved to Starke  in 1988 and later resided in Lake Butler for the last 20 years. She worked for the state of Florida for many of those years. She was of the Presbyterian faith and a homemaker. She always had a happy smile and a unique laugh that always made you feel comfortable being around her. She loved to cook and decorate for the holidays, take care of animals (a lot), and help her niece (Sissy) take care of her three children. Preceding her in death were her mother, Frances Darlene (Stevens) Lafferty of Virginia and her sister Nova Clyatt (Lafferty).

Survivors are: her father, Grover Lee Lafferty Jr.; children, Keith Corson of Starke and Vance Paladino of Lake Butler; siblings, Roy Lafferty, Bill Lafferty, G.L Lafferty of Virginia; niece, Arica Brown and her children, Drayton, Dalen, and Aylah of Lake Butler; and nephews, Adam Adkins and Aaron Adkins of Lake Butler.

Maegan Johnson

LAWTEY Maegan R. Johnson, 32, of Lawtey died on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022 at St. Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She was a member of the Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church. She was a lifelong resident of Lawtey and attended the local schools of Bradford County. She graduated with an associate’s degree from college and was an honor student. She was very active with the church choir and also served as the youth secretary. 

She is survived by her parents, Edmond and Sylvia Johnson; two brothers, William Aldridge III and Devin Ryan (Taylor) Johnson; two nieces; six nephews; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and many sorrowing friends. 

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, in the Peetsville Cemetery in Lawtey, under the direction of Haile Funeral Home Inc., 802 N. Oak St., Starke, 904-964-7905. The family will arrive at Peetsville Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. There will be no viewing.

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS Steven “Steve” McBride, 55, of Keystone Heights died Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, in Gainesville. 

Visitations are Thursday, Jan. 27,  from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, in the Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Keystone Heights Cemetery.

MELROSE Dorothy May Moore, 85, of Melrose died at her home Sunday, Jan. 16, 2022.

She is survived by her daughters Kelly Miragliotta of Freemantle, Australia and Kimberly Anne Pate of Keystone Heights and four grandsons.

Vera Nicula

Vera H. Nicula was a godly wife, mother, nana, and friend.  She left this world after an extended illness on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022 at the age of 82. She was born to Bill and Goldie Myers on Oct. 7, 1939.  She had five brothers and four sisters who preceded her in death.  She met the love of her life at the restaurant where she was a waitress, her mother was the cook and her soon-to-be husband was a waiter. She married Octavian Nicula on April 24, 1958.  They were married 55 years. 

She is survived by two children:  Perry (Gayle) Nicula and Vickie (Jay) Eaves. She had five grandchildren: Laura (Dusty) Griffis, Kasey (Brandon) Bradley, John (Kaitlyn) Nicula, Leanna (Eric) Spriggle, and Jackson Eaves. She had 11 great-grandchildren:  Dempsey, Ally, Colby, Cruz, Kessler, Baylor, Brix, Everleigh, Banx, Decker and Ripp.  She was a wife, mother and nana to all.  She spent her life living for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and devoting her time to her children and grandchildren.  She was always ready for an adventure with her family, even if we had to strongly persuade her to go.

A celebration of her life was held on Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Denmark Barn with David Cox conducting the service.

She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS James “Jim” E. Powell, 74, of Keystone Heights passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at his home.  He was born on April 2, 1947 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Arthur and Janet (Guild) Powell.  He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a retired real estate broker and contractor. His family settled in Orange Park after his father retired from the Navy.  He grew up in Orange Park, where he graduated from Orange Park High School and attended St. Johns Community College. He was a life member of the Jaycees, AMVETS, and the American Legion.   He owned Keystone Realty-Keystone Construction and bought Wards, which later became J & R Overhead, with partner Robin Griffith.  He was also co-owner of Patsy’s Jym Bar & Grill with his wife, Patsy Ricks.  He loved the water, sailing the St. Johns River, and going to the mountains in Blowing Rock, North Carolina during the summer. 

Jim had 31 years of love and fun with his loving wife, Patsy Ricks of Keystone Heights; daughter, Chanel Powell LeBlanc of Fleming Island and her son Landon Powell LaBlanc; stepson, Brent (LeighAnne) Ricks of Orlando and their son, Gabryel; adopted son, Michael Alayon of Keystone Heights; sisters, Donna (Roger) Wesnitzer of Casper, Wyoming and Janel (Walter) Hawkins of Ocala.

 There will be a birthday celebration of his life on April 2 at 2 p.m.  at 5943 CR 352, Keystone Heights.

SANDERSON Benny “Franklin” Richardson, 80, of Sanderson, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022, at the Macclenny Nursing and Rehab facility, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Jan. 5, 1942, in Sanderson, to Lacy and Emma Laura (McDonald) Richardson. Soon after school, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served until he was honorably discharged. He came back home and, in 1961, married the love of his life, Lura Drulene Luke. The couple moved to Jacksonville in 1964 where he worked for Barco-Duval Inc. He worked as their general superintendent for 28 years until opening his own business in 1991; R&B Contracting, Inc. Known for his work ethic, he remained active in the business until his health recently declined. In 1996, he and his wife were able to move back to Sanderson after they purchased “the farm.” Although proud of the company he built, coming home to the farm, riding the ranger with grandkids, checking on his cows, and being with family are what he really enjoyed. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Lura Drulene “Ging” Richardson; his parents; his brothers, Harry, Wilford, and Vernon Richardson; and sister, Redith Bryant.

He is survived by his son, Franklin E. “Benny” (Debbie) Richardson of Sanderson; daughter, Rhonda K. (Huey “Peanut”) Davis of Middleburg; grandchildren, Lavaughn (Emma) Morris, Melissa Davis, Brent (Corine) Davis, Benny (Corley) Richardson, Christopher Richardson, and Amber (Cotey) Smith; great-grandchildren, Tori, Dallas, Skyler, Abby, Gavin, Brynlee, Boone, and Carolyn (on the way); one great-great- grandchild, Wrenley (on the way); his siblings, Earl (Iris) Richardson of Glen St. Mary, Rachel (Marvin) Lauramore and Joyce Griffis all of Sanderson; and a host of extended family.

A funeral to honor him was held on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the church he attended, Christian Fellowship Temple. Interment followed at South Prong Cemetery in Sanderson. His services were officiated by Brother David Thomas, Brother Jim Cox, and his great-nephew, Brother Bryan Richardson.

RAIFORD Cynthia Carlton Thornton, 65, of Raiford, passed away on Jan. 17, 2022, at her home. She was born on Jan. 21, 1956, at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, to Ernest and Elsie Linzy Carlton. She spent her whole life in Bradford and Union counties. She worked for the Bradford County School Board in a variety of roles, mainly janitorial and culinary until her retirement. She was a caring and devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest; and her brother Ernest Jr.

She is survived by her mother, Elsie Carlton of Raiford; her daughter, Wendy (St. Claire) Sefcik of Lake Butler; grandchildren, Savanna, Falina, and Tucker Sefcik; and brother, Eric Carlton of Raiford.

A memorial will be scheduled at a later date.
