PAID OBITUARY

Larry McCandless Sr.

Larry Brooke McCandless Sr., 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Butler surrounded by his wife and children on Friday, July 22, 2022. He was born in Burnsville, North Carolina, the youngest of six children, to Carl A. and Louise (McCallister) McCandless. He spent his youth growing up in Naples, La Belle, and then Jacksonville. By then he was a teenager. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade when he was 16. He then met and married 14-year-old, Sandy Moon. Both of their mothers agreed and signed for them to get married. He ended up working in construction, and he was good at it. Years later he moved his young family back to Burnsville, North Carolina. He had family there, and he had property given to him by his father. He ended up getting his contractor’s license and starting his own company. By then he had four children and life was good for a while but, as life happens, things sometimes change. After 16 years of marriage, theirs ended. And somehow, when it did, he found himself back in Jacksonville. It ended where it had started. Life part two. A year or so later he met Denise Douglas Harlow. She was divorced with two boys ages 2 and 4. After five years, they married. He raised those boys as if they were his, too. He loved them, and they loved him. They lived in Jacksonville for a while, but in 1998 they moved to Lake Butler, Denise’s hometown. He continued to work in construction until he was badly hurt from a three-story fall. He was on a jobsite on the beach in St. Augustine, repairing damages done to a beach house after Hurricane Frances in September 2004 and just before the next one, Jeanne, was due to hit the next day. He spent the next several years in and out of hospitals, having a total of seven surgeries. Some placing rods or adding nuts and bolts in his leg, and having his ankle fused. He also had fractures to his ribs and back. It took months before he was able to start the process of becoming mobile and then to a wheelchair, a walker, and finally to walk with a cane. But he was never able to work again like he had before. He had always enjoyed life, loved his wife, his children, and his home. He liked to camp, to boat and be on the water, and to go to the springs and to fish salt water, fresh water or in between-he loved it all. He looked forward to trips that he and his brother-in-law, Jerry, would take every year to the Everglades. His brother Roger has a cabin deep in the Everglades. They would take a swamp buggy out to the cabin and stay a week and they had so much fun every time. They would time their trip with the Swamp Buggy races in Naples. His brother and nephew often raced in buggies they built and most of the time they won, too! They made these trips every year until their health began to decline. The last 10 years had been especially hard on his health. He had numerous health issues, problems with his liver, kidneys, and heart. He was also a diabetic and he ended up losing that leg a few years ago to an amputation, the same leg that he had tried so desperately to save back in 2004. He was always so strong, and he amazed the doctors repeatedly with his ability to overcome what, at times, seemed like impossible odds. But this last time was different. He was tired and he had fought the last fight. This time he decided it was time to go home. We brought him home from the hospital under hospice. He made it through the night and then later that day he did go home to his heavenly Father, who he loved with all his heart. He wished to be cremated and to have his ashes spread at special places he had chosen in North Carolina and Florida. Abiding with his wishes, there are no plans for a public service. However, his immediate family will have a private celebration of his life at a time yet to be decided. “Larry, may you finally rest in peace, and we will be together again someday soon.” He was preceded in death by his father, Carl A. McCandless; mother, Louise Wallace; brothers, James McCandless and Burke McCandless; and brother-in-law, Jerry Jerome.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Denise Douglas McCandless: his children, Toni (Nick) Cullaro of Lutz, Lauri (Eric) Hickman of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Teri (Scott) Williams of Seneca, Missouri, Larry (Julie) McCandless Jr. of Park Hill, Oklahoma, Jason Harlow of Jacksonville, Kevin (Megan) Harlow of Lake Butler; a sister June Jerome of Burnsville, North Carolina; brothers, Lyle McCandless of Fort Myers and Roger (Judie) McCandless of Naples; a sister-in-law, Nellie McCandless of Naples; and the mother of his four children, Sandy Moon Johnson, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He also leaves behind eight granddaughters; six grandsons; and five great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
