Matthew O’Berry has withdrawn his candidacy for Clay County Sheriff.

The Keystone Heights resident filed paperwork to run for the Republican nomination last July. In social media posts, O’Berry admitted he lacked the traditional background of other candidates running for the office.

“While I don’t have any Law enforcement experience, I can still leverage data from previous administrations, research, and insights from law enforcement experts to inform and collaborate policing strategies,” he said.

In a Facebook Christmas message, the candidate renewed his commitment not to accept any campaign contributions and said he had five more months in which to collect the 1,061 signatures that would qualify him as a candidate.
