Eva Whitehead places 10th at Class 1A state swimming finals

Union County High School sophomore earned a 10th-place finish at the Nov. 4 Class 1A Swimming Finals, which were held in Ocala.

Whitehead, participating at state for the second straight year, swam a 10th-place time of 58.91 seconds in the preliminaries of the 100-yard backstroke, which qualified her for the consolation finals. She missed the championship finals by two spots.

In the consolation finals, Whitehead had the second-best time of 58.81 seconds to finish tied for 10th overall with Cocoa Beach’s Abby Clayton. P.K. Yonge’s Alessandra Quintana had the best time in the consolation finals (58.69).

South Florida HEAT’s Erika Pelaez won the state championship with a time of 51.29.

Whitehead, who placed 20th in the 100 backstroke at last year’s state finals with a time of 59.35, also competed in the 200 individual medley. She placed 22nd with a time of 2:12.

Bolles’ Lila Higgo won the 200 IM championship with a time of 1:59.
